Procrastination and me (what is procrastination?)

Procrastination is typically defined as to delay a task or action for another time. On it's own procrastination isn't always a bad thing but for most of us procrastination becomes a "coping" mechanism for anxiety or stress.

The strategy of putting things off is usually worse than actually dealing with the situation at the time and although most of us already understand this, we still often feel that we would handle things better at another time or maybe we hope that overtime it would just go away. Frequently when we think about a task it can seem bigger than it is and the more we worry about it the worse the task seems and once a task is put off the next time it arises it seems even bigger than before. As the task or action never gets completed the amount of energy we use to avoid it increases and the more tired we become making it even harder to complete than before. It becomes a vicious and a self-defeating behaviour that can become a major disabling habit.

As a perfectionist I am prone to procrastination, usually as a result of feeling that I need to complete the task with total satisfaction and in order to achieve this I need to put in a lot of work (thinking) up front and therefore I continuously put off performing the action or task.
