My favourite famous depressed celebrity

by brainmenu 14. April 2008 09:28

Ha! I'm sure she wouldn't be impressed by the title of this post but there is a 'celebrity' who over the past 6 months has made an impression on me and perhaps it his how she has dealt with her depression that has impressed me the most.

Being a male in my mid-30's and having never read a Harry Potter book you might be surprised to learn that my favourite celebrity at the moment is J.K.Rowling. I will come clean and admit that I have sat, watched and enjoyed a couple of Harry Potter films on the TV with my kids but it is the way J.K.Rowling has and still continues to deal with life that I admire most.

You may already be aware that as a young single mum Rowling suffered from clinical depression and became suicidal. Yet, she managed to write her first novel and become an incredible success. To many of us it appeared that the Harry Potter books became a global blockbuster almost overnight but from what I can tell it took years before it finally happened. To achieve worldwide success for a book would have been a phonomenal achievement but J.K.Rowling has accomplished so much more.

I recommend you watch "J.K.Rowling... A Year In The Life" a documentary shown in Great Britian at the end of 2007. Allowing a film crew to follow and document her life must have been very difficult but she came across as a very honest, hard working and caring person. A "normal" person who has achieved a great deal and who uses her life experiences to cope with everything that life throws at her. Being a celebrity looks like hard work and it seems a bit awkward for her but she works at it and manages to enjoy elements of her success. Being rich and famous does have some benefits and she seems very passioniate and committed to her charity work.

Not knowing her it is probably unfair for me to say this but I get the impression that depression still plays a major part in her life. I certainly hope we get the opportunity to learn more about J.K.Rowling as a person and not just J.K.Rowling the creator of Harry Potter.
