Eyesight affected by depression and anxiety

by brainmenu 3. April 2008 00:24

It was more than 15 years since I had last had my eyes tested but when things started going blurry and out of focus I thought I ought to get my eyes checked.  I was in for a surprise...

At first I had just noticed that sometimes things seemed a bit out of focus and just thought this might be because I was tired but within a month things had started to get bad and I was really concerned that I might have a serious sight problem. A quick search of the Internet seemed to be full of people who were blind and suffering from depression but getting useful information for someone suffering from depression with problems with their eyes seemed to be full of opinion and no fact.

So, off I went and got my eyes tested. Sure enough they found a slight astigmatism and prescribed glasses. Having never worn a pair of glasses, it was really difficult choosing a pair. The assistant in the shop was a bit wacky and recommended all sorts of strange designs but eventually I settled on a pair that was slightly different to normal but not particularly daring. Wearing the glasses I could immediately see a difference and started to get into the habit of wearing them.

A week or two later and I had some psychotic experiences and was put on to some pretty strong medication. Once the medication kicked in my eye sight returned to it's usual perfection and the glasses were no longer required. I'm no longer on the anti-psychotic medication and my eyesight is still good.

Whilst I couldn't say I'm 100% absolutely definitely positively certain, I do believe that my eyesight was affected by depression and anxiety and most importantly the effect was temporary. I hope this helps anyone worrying about this and maybe save you the money you might have otherwise spent on some specs.
